Shakespeare creates tension by using dramatic irony. An example of Shakespeare using dramatic irony is by king Duncan telling macbeth that he really trusts him, but king Duncan has no idea that Macbeth wants to kill him, to become king, but the audience knows what Macbeth’s plan are and his intentions. This is dramatic irony because the audience knows something that the character doesn’t know. The effect of including dramatic irony is that the audience is aware of everything and therefore it creates tension. This was said in Act 1 scene 4. Also, another language device used is foreshadowing, when the witches tell Macbeth’s fate they dont tell explain the full details on how macbeth is going to become king. This can represent destiny because it was bound that macbeth would become king. This hooks the reader in because when the witches told macbeth his prophecy that he was going to become king, the audience wanted to know how he was going to become king.

Another way that Shakespeare creates dramatic irony is by adding soliloquy. As the audience hearing a thought that is said from the character, that only the reader knows. It is very affective because we can tell what will happen next in the play. shakespeare wants the audience to know more than the characters, so that the play does not become boring, as you never know what is going to happen next.”Is this a dagger i see before me.” This quotation creates dramatic irony because it is a rhetorical question. this is affective because he is speaking directly to the audience. Macbeth his speaking metaphorically because the dagger is representing the way he killed king duncan, and that he still has guilt for what he has done. This creates tension because macbeth is already starting to regret his act of killing king duncan, because of this all is going wrong. This is why i think Shakespeare creates tension by using dramatic irony.

Shakespeare plays with the idea of Macbeth’s fate by telling him a prophecy that he will become king. This prophecy was said by the witches. The witches played with Macbeth’s fate because they never told him the full detail on how he will become king. Macbeth kills king Duncan but he didn’t know what could of happened to king duncan,  and he could have become king anyway. “All hail, Macbeth Hail to thee, thane of Glamis! All hail, Macbeth Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth Hail to thee, thou shall be King hereafter!” This is an example of the witches telling macbeth that he will become king and talks about his prophecy, and puts the idea in Macbeth’s head that he will become king. Shakespeare adds the witches supernatural elements to play with macbeth destiny but it may sagest what was going to happen all along. The witches could of known that macbeth would of became king because king Duncan would of died of old age, but the witches might of not wanted to tell Macbeth that.
